Charlie Weis; New Chiefs OC?

Recent news floating around the South Ben Tribune, has rumors running wild of Charlie Weis' name being thrown into the mix of the Kansas City Chiefs offensive co-coordinator position.

If you remember back to the preseason (I know, it's been so long already), Chiefs Head Coach had fired his offensive coordinator of the time, Chan Gailey, and had been serving as the OC since.

Weis, who recently said in his Sunday press conference that he does not have any plans of resignation, but that if the University decided to take action and fire Weis that "if they decided to do something, could you understand that? I'm the head football coach. Who else is responsible? Now, I could sit there and try to blame everybody else, but who is - ultimately, it falls on my shoulders. That's the way it is."

Weis has a very questionable record of 35-26, including a 6-5 campaign with an upcoming game this Saturday against a very tough Stanford Cardinal team.

Now, this is all a game of "what-ifs" at this point, but if Weis somehow finds himself unemployed come the end of this college football season, the Kansas City Chiefs make too much sense for him not to make the leap back into the NFL.

As we all know, before Weis had decided to leave the Patriots as one of the most high-profile offensive co-coordinators in the league to coach at his alma mater, Notre Dame, he was coach under Scott Pioli.

Pioli was the vice president of player personnel for the Patriots when Wies was there.

Weis would also inherit a quarterback, who had showed up in New England the year after he had left. Matt Cassel should be able to pick-up Weis' system fairly quickly.

And now we get to Head Coach Todd Haley.

In 1995, Haley was hired by the New York Jets to work as an assistant in the scouting department, and in just two years (1997), he was promoted to an offensive assistant position where he worked closely with none other than Charlie Weis, who was the Jets' offensive co-coordinator at the time.

While no one has directly come out and commented on this story, all the signs are there to make this move make sense.

If Charlie Weis is indeed let go by Notre Dame, we could see a small reunion in Kansas City, where I'm sure Pioli would be glad to have Weis help lead him to three more Super Bowl victories.
