DeMarcus Ware Agrees to Six-Year Extension

The deal that everyone was expecting to get done, has gotten done. Instead of waiting and taking the chance that an uncapped year would result in DeMarcus Ware becoming a restricted rather than unrestricted free agent, Jerry Jones decided to lock up his best player for another six years.

The deal is reportedly worth nearly $13 million per year, and a guaranteed $40 million. Right now, these are only estimates as the contract has been agreed upon, but has not passed through the proper channels to be officially approved by the league just yet.

This is a very good move by the Cowboys because even Jerry Jones probably would not have been able to outbid what a desperate owner would have been willing to pan out for a player like Ware, who has been the best outside linebacker in the league over the past couple of years.

Especially teams like the Broncos and Packers would have been salivating if Ware hit the free agent market, and most likely would have had no qualms about clearing their roster in order to get such a difference maker for their brand new 3-4 schemes.

This deal could set the precedent for what someone like Shawne Merriman will want if or when he hits the free agent market, so it gives other teams something to work off of. Merriman is likely aware of the big money, and will be very difficult to keep out of free agency wants he starts seeing green.

I'm assuming it will look something like the old cartoons when the eyes of the characters would turn to green dollar signs.
