Fantasy Shiners and Sleepers: Week Three

Here's the Week 3 edition of my Fantasy Football picks. I've had some big picks, and I've had some duds, but who doesn't? I feel confident in my picks this week now that I've had two weeks to break down some teams and players. I'll quit boring you, and just give you the picks already.

Quarterbacks

Top - Drew Brees vs Buffalo

You can't argue with production, and the Drew Brees led Saint's offense has done nothing but produce fantastic numbers. Drew Brees is well on his way to pressing Dan Marino's single season yardage record, and if he keeps up with his touchdown production, we'll see Tom Brady's TD record go down too. Byron Leftwich put up 296 yards las week against Buffalo, so expect Brees to be able to surpass that mark.

Sleeper - Kevin Kolb vs Kansas City

I guess Philadelphia doesn't have an awful back-up after all. Kolb was often labeled as terrible, and would never be able to succeed in the NFL, but he came out last week in his first NFL start and showed that he can handle the spotlight. Kolb threw for 391 yards and 2 scores. He had 3 interceptions, but 2 were in garbage time so i wouldn't worry about that against a weak Kansas City secondary. (Obviously this is barring a Kolb start.)

Running Backs

Top - Matt Forte vs Seattle

Did anyone see if Seattle put a defense on the field last week? Frank Gore rushed for 207 yards against the Seahawks, and I don't expect much less from Matt Forte. Forte has been virtually non-existant in the first two games of the season, so expect a break-out game this Sunday.

Sleeper - Marion Barber vs Carolina

The Carolina defense is giving up over 150 yards per game on the ground. You can certainly attribute this to the loss of Ma'ake Kemoeatu in the pre-season. The big man in the middle is gone, leaving a lot of room to run. Barber is averaging 100 yards per game, with 6.3 yards per attempt and 2 touchdowns.

Wide Receivers

Top - Andre Johnson vs Jacksonville

After a bad week one showing, Andre Johnson exploded last week against Tennessee and I expect that kind of production to stay from here on out. Andre Johnson can be the best wide receiver in the NFL if Matt Schaub can stay healthy and play consistent football.

Sleeper - Mario Manningham vs Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay was torched in week one by the Giants fellow division rival, Dallas. I expect some of the same stuff from Mario Mannigham. I've always been a fan of Manningham since his days at Michigan. I remember being at the Capitol One Bowl 2 years back when Michigan upset Florida and Manningham had a big game. He's proving to be a good target for Eli.

Tight Ends

Top - Dallas Clark vs Arizona

222 yards in the first two games of the season, and he becomes an even bigger part of the offense since the loss of Anthony Gonzalez. This is going to be a shootout between these two teams so expect some big numbers through the air as I eluded to earlier.

Sleeper - Brent Celek vs Kansas City

He's becoming a solid pass catcher in the NFL, and with Kolb getting his 2nd NFL start, Brent becomes that security blanket you often hear the Tight Ends referred to as. Kolb found Celek 8 times for 104 yards last week against New Orleans. I expect some of the same production if Kolb gets the nod this week again.

Defense

Top - Baltimore vs Cleveland

Baltimore is allowing less than 60 yards on the ground per game. Cleveland has been horrendous in all facets of the game, and I don't expect them to find success against the Ravens defense. Big day for Ray Lewis and company.

Sleeper - Chicago vs Seattle

With the possibilty of Matt Hasselbeck not suiting up for ths game, it gets even better for the Bears defense. They held their own in week one when the offense turned the ball over 4 times, and they held down the defending champs last week and secured a win. Whether it's Hasselbeck or Seneca Wallace, expect the Bears defense to dominate.
