Mike Martz, the team's new offensive coordinator, is a guy who is known not to incorporate tight ends into his pass-happy offensive philosophy. I mean, can you name the tight ends in St. Louis during the "Greatest Show on Turf" era without looking it up? I'll wait...
Didn't think so.
You may even attribute the fall in production from Vernon Davis' second year to his third year to Martz. In 2008, under Mike Martz, Vernon Davis had 21 less receptions and 150 less yards than he had the year prior. We all know what Vernon Davis is capable of. (78 rec, 965 yds, 13 TD's in 2009.)
Olsen was the Bears first round choice in 2007, and has improved each season in Chicago but he's never turned into the premier tight end that Chicago had hoped they drafted.
Now with Martz at the helm of the offense, tracking history, one can only assume that his production would go down.
This is a story to keep an eye on as we head further into the off-season. Some team could get a young, talented tight end for a few draft picks. With the Jay Cutler deal under their belt, the Bears could use a few of those.
