Oakland Raiders to Severely Overpay Richard Seymour

The Oakland Raiders traded away their 2011 first round pick to the New England Patriots in order to acquire defensive end Richard Seymour last offseason. He only had one year left on his contract, but that wasn't going to stop Al Davis from getting his man.

Now Seymour's deal is up, and it looks like the Raiders are going to overpay him one way or another. They're only option, outside of convincing him to sign a long-term deal, is to slap him with the franchise tag that will pay him nearly $13 million in 2010.

Right now, the franchise tag looks like the most likely option, because unless the deal is downright outrageous, Seymour would most likely have no desire to return to the Raiders.

But, as we all know, there's a very good chance that the deal offered up will meet the "outrageous" standard for Davis.

And if the deal is as bad as I'm expecting it to be, Seymour could be tempted to stick around the bay area for the rest of his career.

He's already got three Super Bowls with New England, so he might figure it's best now to just get as much money as possible from his crazy old boss and try to turn things around.

Either way, I expect Seymour to get slapped with the tag sometime around next week on Monday or Tuesday. The deadline is February 25th, so they have until Thursday to make a decision.
