New York Giants Release Middle Linebacker Antonio Pierce

The New York Star-Ledger is reporting that New York Giants' middle linebacker Antonio Pierce has been released. Pierce reportedly emailed the paper to inform them of the move, and that it will be made official by the Giants later today.

Because of his experience in the league (nine seasons), he will immediately become an unrestricted free agent, regardless of the status of the CBA.

Pierce's play has seen a decline over the past couple years, and he has been plagued by a neck injury forcing him to miss seven games last season, but he's still a guy who can help a team in desperate need of linebacker help.

A team to keep an eye on could be the Giants' division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles. With Stewart Bradley returning from a torn ACL, the Eagles could be looking for someone to come in and play in the middle of he's unable to return to form.

The Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills could also make a play for Antonio Pierce because of their switch to the 3-4. He's never played in the system, but they're going to be looking for linebackers immediately and if he shows he can handle it either team could snatch him up.
