Eagles to Release Running Back Brian Westbrook

In an expected, but still shocking move, the Eagles have decided to part ways with versatile running back Brian Westbrook.

Westbrook finishes his Eagles career as top three in most of the franchise's records.

Westbrook was severely limited in 2009 after suffering two concussions and missing half the season as a result, along with knee and ankle injuries. Westbrook has been on the decline for a couple seasons now, and with his inflated $7.25 million salary in 2010, it makes sense for the Eagles to release him now.

LeSean McCoy, a second round pick, filled in admirably in Westbrook's absence, and the Eagles obviously feel comfortable moving forward with McCoy as the primary ball-carrier.

With LaDainian Tomlinson hitting the market as well, it could cause the price, and demand, for both backs to drop significantly.

"Brian is one of the greatest Eagles of all time and he is even a better person and leader," coach Andy Reid said. "In my mind, there has not been a more versatile running back that the NFL has seen. I had a conversation with Brian this morning to let him know. This is by far the most difficult part of this job.

"We wanted to make this move now in order to maximize Brian's chances of landing with another NFL team."
