Chicago Bears Hire Mike Martz as Offensive Coordinator

In what could turn out to be one of the best moves of the offseason, the Chicago Bears have hired former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz to be their next offensive coordinator.

I'm not now, nor have I ever been a huge fan of Martz, but his wide open passing attack is exactly what this Bears offense needs to get started and win some games. The combination of a gunslinger like Jay Cutler, speedy receivers, and a pass-catching back like Matt Forte is what will equal success for Martz's offense.

Cutler's quick release will benefit him more than ever since Martz's blocking schemes aren't exactly up to par with other offensive coordinators. That could also be because Martz isn't real worried about it. His philosophy is to get the ball in the air and let his speedy receivers run underneath it.

He'll do it over and over again until it finally works. And if you run the same plays 40 times over, you're bound to break them open a few times, aren't you?

The Bears will have to go out and find some better offensive linemen who will be able to deal with the lack of a blocking scheme, but that's about it. Other than that, the offense is set for what Martz wants to deal.

Along with Cutler, speedy receivers like Johnny Knox and Devin Hester, and a pass-catching back like Forte, you have one of the most underrated tight ends in the league in Greg Olsen.

Olsen and Cutler have already formed a rapport, as made evident by Cutler's tendency to force the ball to him at the most inopportune moments. That will end under Martz and will most certainly spell success for the Bears' offense in 2010.

Want a quick comparison to the 2010 Bears? How about the 2008 Denver Broncos with a defense about a notch better than what the Broncos had in '08. With the roster they have right now, expect a 9-7, 10-6 season for the 2010 Bears.
