Bears Could Wind Up Getting Better of Gaines Deal

Okay, so I opted against using a clever headline like "Bears Gaines Another Defensive End" or "Tampa Bay Gaines a Second Round Pick for Bust" because, well, I don't really think they're that clever. Bit stupid and reads like it's being shoved down your throat. But that's just me.

But quite seriously, the Bears really could wind up getting the better end of this deal because, for me, Gaines Adams has shown that he has all the skill in the world. The only thing he hasn't had, at least on a consistent basis, is coaching.

He will get that in Chicago with coach Rod Marinelli back where he belongs, and that's running the defensive line.

He's absolutely one of the very best defensive line coaches in the entire league. He's up there with Jim Washburn and Pete Jenkins, who recently retired from the Eagles staff.

Now some may say, "Well Adams had Monte Kiffin." Yeah, he did, but not for all that long. He had him for his rookie season in 2007, but we're all lying to ourselves if we don't think Kiffin phoned it in because he knew he'd be in Tennessee this season.

Ha, look at that. He's right where he thought he would be.

While it will take a lot of production out of Gaines to warrant a second-round pick (how did they pull that off?), if there is anyone who can do it for him, it's Marinelli.

Expect Adams to really excel in spot duty with Chicago, but to eventually overtake Alex Brown, he really is nothing more than a third down pass-rush specialist.
