Gary Kubiak Signs New Three-Year Deal With Texans

The Houston Texans have given Gary Kubiak a new three-year deal to keep him in Houston through the 2012 season. Kubiak did not sign an extension, but instead had the final year of his original five-year contract torn up so he would be signed only through 2012.

"I want to be on the same path as them," Kubiak said. "I think that's important. It shows we're all in this together."

It's a very good move by owner Bob McNair to keep Kubiak around rather than going out and hiring a new coach with a new system and new players. McNair chose continuity -- something that too few owners decide to do in this day-and-age of the NFL.

However, Kubiak probably knows that another 9-7 season, or even worse a digression into another .500 season, will test McNair's patience and make him question Kubiak. Consistent progress will have to be made if Kubiak is going to live out his new contract.

With coaches like Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher, and Brian Billick floating around next season, it would be very difficult to stick with a coach who has missed the playoffs five years in a row.

However, as I've said before, I don't believe that will be an issue. If Matt Schaub can stay healthy and they can add a piece here and there in the offseason, the Texans will earn their first playoff berth in 2010.
