However, in order to make him into a receiver, the Bears thought that it would be a good idea to relieve him of his duties as a kick returner. Johnny Knox filled in admirably for Hester this past season, returning one kick for a touchdown, but it's impossible to replace arguably the best kick returner of all-time.
Josh Cribbs may take exception to that, but there's no saying what numbers Hester would have if he would have been returning kicks for the past two seasons.
And now Hester is finally starting to come out publicly and say that he would like to be returning kicks.
"I know what I'm best at," Hester said. "The return game is my bread and butter, so if I had to cut back on my receiving and go back to returning, that's something I would love to do."
The Bears may be able to get by and still have a good return unit without Hester, but there's no point in making him watch someone else do it. If he wants to go back to returning kicks, let him do it and let him go back to single-handedly winning games with his returns.
Knox was good, but only Devin Hester can get the Bears off the hook.
