He lost out to Yamon Figurs, a third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens just a few years ago.
However, Figurs' career catch total matches that of the round in which he was drafted.
Three. In his entire two (and a half) year career, Figurs has only been able to rack up three catches. Granted, he played for the Baltimore Ravens, who don't exactly toss the ball around a whole lot, but you would think he could catch more than three passes. Even by accident.
He does have two returns for touchdowns, one kick and one punt return, all in his rookie season. All he needs is one more year like that and he can actually surpass his catch total with returns for touchdowns. Wouldn't that be fun?
No, it would be sad.
It's even more sad for Matt Jones, a guy who caught nearly 22x Figurs career total in 2008 alone. Because of his awful decisions, it looks as though he's been blackballed from the NFL.
When an 0-5 team with only one legitimate wide receiver doesn't want anything to do with you, and goes with a guy who barely has more NFL catches than myself, it means you have hit rock bottom.
Welcome, Matt Jones. Rae Carruth, Freddie Mitchell, and Charles Rogers are your only friends here in the land of forgotten underachieving-but-seemed-to-have-some-potential-at-some-point wide receivers.
Get cozy, I doubt you'll be leaving any time soon.
