Tom Cable Says Jeff Garcia Asked for His Release

Apparently Jeff Garcia's release from the Oakland Raiders was not under the same pretenses as a normal release for a veteran player. Usually the player has lost a step, or simply doesn't like his place on the team. Garcia evidently didn't like his place on the team, but that place was having a place on the team at all. Convoluted way of saying "Garcia wanted to leave"? Yes.

Cable told ESPN's Adam Schefter, "It was a shock to us all. We were all blown away."

Apparently Garcia wasn't only upset about his role as a backup to JaMarcus Russel, but was obviously having second thoughts about playing at all at age 39.

From here, it appears as though Garcia is just going to sit at home and wait for the call from a desperate team looking for a starting quarterback. This will probably be due to injury, but it could come from a team like the St. Louis Rams or even his former team, the San Francisco 49ers because of unhappiness with their starters.

Either way, Garcia has not officially filed retirement papers, so there's still a possibility he could make an attempt to come back. At 39, however, it certainly wouldn't be a surprise if he decided to hang up the cleats after an unlikely successful NFL career following his stint in the CFL.

Maybe the Vikings want another 39-year old quarterback waffling on whether or not to play this year? (For the record, I have a bromance with Brett Favre. Deal with it.)
