New York Jets Expected to Cut Running Back Thomas Jones

With a $3 million roster bonus coming along with his $2.8 million base salary, the Jets believe that Thomas Jones will be overpaid if they keep him around next season.

And with guys like Shonn Greene and Leon Washington, keeping an aging and overpaid running back around doesn't make much sense. Greene showed up big in the playoffs as a rookie, with two games over 100 yards, and was probably the biggest reason the Jets made it as far as they did.

Jets' GM Mike Tannenbaum talked about Jones while talking to the NY Daily News:

"All I can say is we were fortunate we traded for him three years ago. He has done a lot of great things for us on the field and even more off the field. He's really been our leader, a tireless worker, he's a really good player and a better person. We have a few more days to get that finalized."

The phrase "get that finalized" could mean that they've approached him about taking a pay cut for next season. Whether or not he's willing to take it seems up in the air right now, but I would bet against it.

He understands that Greene is now looked at the guy who's going to replace him, and there is probably a team or two out there still willing to give Jones a chance to start. He's an older guy, but he hasn't dropped off the way LaDainian Tomlinson or Brian Westbrook have.

A team like the Chargers may be willing to give him a shot at starting.
