Buffalo Bills Should Pursue Ravens' Quarterback Troy Smith

New Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey has not made it a secret that he is looking for a veteran quarterback to bring to town.

"This is a quarterback-driven league at this point," Gailey said. "It hasn't always been that way, but it seems to have become more so in the last decade or so. You have to have a quality player there. It does not have to be a big-name player. You just have to have quality production."

Michael Vick has been linked to the Bills, but to me that doesn't seem to make much sense. Vick has had all of his success in a dome and in warm weather, so playing in cold weather full-time doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

Not only that, but the league has seemed to resign itself to the fact that Vick will become a Ram.

So instead, the Bills would be wise to trade for a guy who made a name for himself playing about 300 miles Southwest of Buffalo in Columbus, Ohio at Ohio State University. Former OSU star and current Ravens backup Troy Smith would fit perfectly in Buffalo.

Not only is he used to playing in the cold weather, but he's a born leader with a strong arm and more athleticism than most quarterbacks. The big hit on Smith is that he's only about six feet tall, but with Drew Brees just winning his first Super Bowl, teams may change their tune on smaller quarterbacks.

Gailey has said, however, that they have not finished evaluating the quarterbacks already on the roster, and that there's a chance Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, or Brian Brohm could get a shot to regan their starting spots, or in Brohm's case, earn it for the first time.

"Before we get to the first day of free agency we'll have a good idea of where we need to be."

The Bills could probably get Smith for cheap, maybe a fourth round pick, but if they throw in a guy like Fitzpatrick, who would be a very good backup to Joe Flacco, the price could drop to a fifth or sixth.
